The universal manipulators for gravely ill patients' care
This project was expired.
When questions concerning the quality of medical services are raised, we usually discuss the work of doctors and nurses. But we never talk about improving the quality of daily patients’ care. Since the Middle Ages it is considered normal when the patient relieves himself in bed, and the only achievement of our time is the diapers for bed-patients.
Patients with brain or spinal cord injuries suffer from decreased tone of blood vessels and nerve endings, which causes bedsores. Fighting with bedsores requires intensive care of a skin of the back including massage with the use of restorative and antiseptic creams as well as other treatments.
Raising the patient from his bed and getting him seated in a wheelchair requires the help of three people. (Remember the «Million dollar baby» film). It is very difficult to find the desired number of employees who are ready to suffer from psychological discomfort, got from communicating with severely ill patients, often bad-tempered, and at the same high quality and adequately perform care. The hospital authorities have to employ additional personnel, often unqualified, to perform labor-intensive care, but maintenance still cannot be provided at a proper level.
For a comprehensive implementation of all labour-consuming works of nursing, a universal manipulator with special care techniques has been developed. It allows to increase labor productivity of attendants, as well as to improve the quality of patients’ care.
Starting with lifting the patient from the ambulance stretchers and transporting him to the operating room, moving him to the ward and putting to bed, the patient can 3—4 times a day raised from the bed and transported to the bathroom, to the treatment room, to the shower, etc. The manipulator can be used as simulator for training muscles of the limbs, until the patient gets on his feet. All these operations on the maintenance of 8—10 patients can be performed by a single operator using 2 manipulators. Besides, it is possible to produce a robot based on the manipulator, which the patient can run by himself. The patient using the robotic arm will be able to get out of his bed and move around. The main achievement is the substantial improvement in the quality of care, which will be obvious when we compare the old and the new technologies. Need for hospital personnel falls more than twice, which is relevant if we take into account the continuous labour shortage.
The company for the production and implementation of universal manipulators is planned to be established. To begin with, it is planned to produce 10—15 devices, with which the firm can start working in hospitals and old people’s homes. Device manufacturing approximately requires 6—8 months from the start of financing.
