About our project

The problem we solve: The problem Neutun is addressing is the lack of convenient, objective, automated recording of convulsive epilepsy and chronic condition cases. Many people living with convulsive epilepsy must depend on memory or other people recording seizure activity when discussing their condition with their healthcare team. Our family has had many medical scares over the years, including Eric having flesheating disease, a family member suffering from epilepsy and our mother having slipped discs in her neck and having open back surgery for a broken spinal bone. We were forced to carefully keep track of our medical conditions and subsequent health outcomes. We built Neutun to track and manage the conditions we live with on a daily basis. Currently, an estimated 300,000 Canadians/90,000 Ontarians/3 million Americans/65 million people around the world live with epilepsy. 1 in 26 Americans will develop epilepsy in their lifetime, and each year in the USA 200,000 people are diagnosed with epilepsy.

About our solution: Neutun provides safe and stigma free seizure tracking from your smartphone and smartwatch. The Neutun solution solves the target customer's problems by enabling automated recording of convulsive seizures, informing concerned parties of any potential seizure-like events occurring, and offering the possibility to build further functionality into the system that would better detect non convulsive seizures. We give users the ability to analyze the data we track; this benefits them by identifying missed seizures, notifying loved ones of events and providing critical medical information to first responders. Neutun can notify indicated individuals via email, SMS and automated phone calling (varies by country).

Progress to date:

-thousands of users in over 900 cities globally

-Working with Google, USARx, Johson and Johnson and more

-Working with top academic and health institutions

How We Help Patients

Neutun provides safe and stigma free seizure tracking from your smartphone and smartwatch. In the near future, we will be adding sensors such as heart rate and electrodermal activity to enhance Neutun’s emergency and seizure detection capacities. This enables potential detection of deadly cases of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy patients (SUDEP) as well as continuous tailoring of a patient's treatment regime, which is pleasing to patients, their family and friends, and physicians. Our hardware agnostic approach positions our product above all others. It's also easy to convince others of our proof of concept (ie seizures > uncontrolled gross motor movements > accelerometer metrics) because of intuitive cause and effect. We overcome competitors by having the best seizure detection algorithms, increasing accuracy with our machine learning algorithms based on the data we collect and being an easily adopted and distributed platform across devices. This includes strategic partnerships like: UPenn Medicine Epilepsy Center , IBX, York University, Pebble, Interaxon Muse and more.

Challenge Mission

Key Milestones Achieved and Planned

Our Competitive Advantages

Premium subscriptions are projected to generate approximately $34,000 in 2016 and grow to over $2.7 million by 2018. With an estimated 50,426 users paying $9.99 per month by the end of 2018, Neutun would generate an annual recurring revenue of over $6 million. As more users begin ordering prescriptions via the app, affiliate fees are expected to provide the bulk of Neutun’s revenue growth. Neutun estimates it will fill over 5 million user prescriptions in 2018, generating over $10 million in revenue. The final piece of Neutun’s business model is clinical trials. In 2017, the company projects it will participate in four clinical trials, with 350 patients per trial. Collecting $3,000 per participant, Neutun would generate $4.2 million. In 2018, it anticipates participating in five clinical trials, generating $5.25 million in revenue. Neutun assumes that it will be able to convert 2% of its total user base to Premium users. Barriers to Entry

BioLert: BioLert was founded in 2005 and offers a wearable movement monitoring device called EpiLert. The device alerts caregivers and calls for support when it detects that the user is having a seizure. The device also provides the user with insight into their movement patterns. The company won $100,000 in a start-up competition in Israel in 2005 and won the Medical Futures Innovation Award in London in 2007.xi

Empatica: Empatica designs and develops wearable and clinical-quality sensing devices for medical research and personal monitoring. Recently they completed a s crowdfunding campaign for the Embrace watch, a device that monitors physiological stress, sleep, wakefulness, and physical activity. The watch is designed to help people with epilepsy by alerting their caregivers, in real time, when the device detects unusual events like convulsive seizures. The watch is currently available for $199.xii

SeizAlarm: SeizAlarm is an app for iPhone or Apple Watch users
