About our project
Hi,
My name is Sarah Krug and I run the Cancer 101 education program that helps people with cancer and other diseases learn about them. We are a 501c3 non-profit that also helps people make donations to fund the research that they care about, issuing grants to doctors and researchers that apply for them. New in 2013, our Foundation is partnering with MedStartr to enable donations for many projects including Corporate challenges.
The way the program works is that people working on cures and care innovations apply to Cancer 101 for a “Crowd Grant”. After we verify the innovation is clinically sound and the innovator’s credentials are checked, we ask MedStartr to list the project. Next is where you come in and pick the specific projects you would like to fund. MedStartr automates this process in ways never before possible and we think you will love it!
If the project is funded, the 101 Foundation will enable your donations to be rolled up into a single check and issued as a Grant to fund the work described. You get a tax deductible receipt and the work goes forward and usually a perk like a Pin, T-Shirt, or car magnet that shows your support and helps spread awareness. If the project is not funded enough to proceed, you are never charged a dime. You can also choose to be informed of progress on the project and more. We also require all projects to certify and prove compliance with the goals they stated in their project.
For those who would like to support care improvements and clinical research, you now are in the driver’s seat and can control what gets funded. No longer do you need to give blindly to Foundations that may spend only half or less of the collected funds on the research you care about. No longer will YOU have no say in which projects get funded. Now, with the benefit of crowdfunding, YOU choose where your money goes and we give complete transparency to where your donations go, with over 88% going to the actual research.
Why is this important?
The time has come for all of us to choose the projects we care about and to fund research directly. There is a significant gap to be overcome between the work that needs to be done and the funding to get it there. The Cancer 101 foundation and MedStartr are proud to help fill this need and are here to help.
How your donations will be spent:
For every dollar you donate:
- 2.9 cents goes to our credit card processor
- 4.0 cents goes to the Cancer 101 foundation administrative costs
- 5.0 cents goes to MedStartr for automating this process.
*88.1 cents goes to the research

What to you hope to accomplish with this specific project?
This project on MedStartr is for the Cancer 101 fund for Breast Cancer Innovation projects like the one depicted in the video above. We are sad to report that we lost our Founder in 2011 to Cancer, but we continue her work with pride and the same passion. We are a community of Cancer survivors helping others. We know how important this work is and we will not give up.
